More Speeding Ticket Excuses in California
From time to time we like to bring you humorous stories about speeding ticket excuses that law enforcement has heard (or had to endure) in the line of duty. In this article, Greg Williams, a California Highway Patrol officer claims to have heard them all and shares his experiences with speeding drivers’ excuses. This proves there is not much a person will not say to get out of a ticket. Williams said there have been some good ones over the years, including the following:
- In the mid-80s, Williams pulled over a Corvette on I-5 that had been doing 125 mph. The driver’s speeding ticket excuse… “I couldn’t be going that fast. My speedometer only goes to 85 mph.”
- A common speeding ticket excuse involves either a pregnant wife or a sick relative. Williams said he once pulled over a man for speeding and the man’s pregnant wife was in the passenger seat. He said he was speeding because he needed to get her to the hospital. “She was showing pretty good, but she wasn’t that far along,” Williams said. Williams told the driver he would follow him to the hospital. The man drove as far as Kern Medical Center’s parking lot before getting out of his car, walking up to Williams’ cruiser and saying, “I lied.”
- Williams once stopped an older couple on Highway 99 near Taft Highway driving 20 miles over the speed limit. He said it was apparent the wife was peeved at the husband, who was driving. Williams asked where they were headed and the husband replied that they were going to his son’s place in Ventura. Where had they started? West L.A. “When did you notice the ocean wasn’t on your left side?” Williams asked. Apparently, the wife had been trying to get her husband to turn around for at least the past half hour, but he refused. Williams gave them directions, but he’s not sure it helped. “Last I saw they were still northbound on 99 going through Bakersfield.” As far as we can see this speeding ticket excuse worked!
- An officer responded to a fender bender and asked the driver at fault what happened. The driver asked the officer if he wanted the truth or the story he made up. At this point, the officer should have known there’d be a story to tell here. The officer asked for the truth. The driver said he had been picking his nose and reached for a tissue. When he looked up it was too late to avoid the fender bender. The made up story? He was going to tell the officer he was switching radio stations when the crash happened.
