The History and Speed Law Specific Sections of the California Vehicle Code
The California Vehicle Code contains the majority of statutes relating to the ownership and operation of motor vehicles in the state of California. It is a compilation of:
- The Motor Vehicle Act of 1913, when driver’s licenses were first mandated
- The Vehicle Act of 1915
- The Vehicle Act of 1923
These three were codified into the first version of the California Vehicle Code in 1935. In 1959, it was reorganized and many of the items renumbered and reclassified for clarification.
The California Vehicle Code also contains a number of criminal law sections specific to the theft and misuse of a motor vehicle.
For purposes of this site, we will concentrate primarily on the Speeding sections of the California Vehicle Code. These include California Vehicle Code / Speed Laws sections 22348 through 22366 and California Vehicle Code / Other Speed Laws sections 22400 through 22413.
